Alabukun: Nigeria’s First Locally-Produced Modern Drug

If you were born in the 70s or grew up in the 80s, you will be sure to remember the calls of women as they carry local ‘agbo’ medicine from street to street. Intertwined between their wares was the famous Alabukun powder in a white and red packet, as they play the role of both a traditional healer and a pharmacist. Not just that, when you go to any chemist nationwide then, you are sure to find this medication. It is very interesting to find that at a point Nigerians take Alabukun regularly for major ailments like pain, headaches, irritation etc, thereby making it one of the most abused drugs at that time. So, what exactly is the drug Alabukun and what is the use? Alabukun was produced in 1918 by Jacob  Sogboyega Odulate, a Nigerian Pharmacist. With a determination not to just make a name for himself but put Nigeria on the map as a medicine producing nation, Odulate went ahead to produce and package the famous Alabukun powder. Just like the popular Andrew liver salt, Alabukun was largely used to treat migraine headache, fever, pain and even arthritis. Yes, the drug has the potential to do a lot of these. Alabukun Powder contains Acetylsalicylic Acid and Caffeine as active ingredients with mixture of herbal and European ingredients. There were claims that it treats myocardial infarction ( medical language for heart attack). It may because it contains acetylsalicylic acid. However, any medical professional knows that the acetylsalicylic which is also an active ingredient in Aspirin is better used for preventive purposes and not as a cure (meaning it can reduce the risk for heart attack). So why would Nigerians go crazy after this medication? It’s simply because it did work! Just as the American Aspirin would work, Alabukun did work. Alabukun is still being used till date by some people However, there is a huge difference between medicine over a century ago and now. Yes! Alabukun is that old and I think Nigerians needs to celebrate this drug. However, we need to know this fact: It cannot just be consumed as a regular herbal medication without a doctor’s prescription. This is because the major component acetylsalicylic can inhibit platelet aggregation acting as a blood thinner. In other words, there is increased bleeding with this medication and shouldn’t be consumed or taken as a daily pain management medication without a doctor’s knowledge; especially for women who are of child bearing age and children. Too much consumption can cause ringing in the ears ( known as tinnitus), liver toxicity or in some cases constipation. So the next time you see a package of Alabukun, celebrate the creativity of a Nigerian legend but don’t be too quick to take this without letting your physician know about it.

7 Top Healthiest Foods For Children

It is very essential that children are fed healthily. However, nowadays, most parents do not care about that and tend to feed their children more of junks and fast foods. Asides that, fast foods are even more appealing to most children because of the taste. Some children cannot eat good food. All they love to feed on are biscuits, sweets, drinks, chocolates, fries, etc But these children do not know that regular junk food intake can cause health problems such as obesity and even chronic diseases later in life. Most junks lack vitamins such as vitamins A and C, and minerals such as magnesium and calcium that are needed for development. That is why it is essential that parents see the need to inculcate healthy eating into their children even right from toddlers. When I was small, I barely eat junks. This is because my parents are very strict when it comes to healthy eating. My siblings and I will eat before leaving for school in the morning with no biscuit nor money to buy one. As time went by, we started collecting #5 as feeding money. Trust me, we were always giving accounts of what we spent the money on, thereby making it impossible for us to just eat anything. We take soft drinks occasionally (like festive periods), unlike now that we are all grown up and can decide to take soft drinks with our money without our parents consent. Till date, one of the major reason I don’t to eat foods like pizza, sharwama, noodles, etc is because I wasn’t used to eating them. Few days ago, my dad still called my siblings and I and gave us a thorough health talk. To him, the oil we used in frying the bean cake that day was much and the vegetables we prepared for him was salty. Trust me, to some, the food won’t be delicious in their mouths 😂. From experience, I’ve come to realise that feeding children with nutritious foods and avoiding junk as much as possible is the best. Eating healthily aids the development of the child. There are lots of healthy foods but in this article, I want to list 7 top healthiest foods that are essential for a child’s growth. 1) EGGS Eggs are highly rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. The protein in eggs helps maintain and repair body tissues while the vitamins and minerals are essential for effectiveness of the brain and the nervous system. 2) LEGUMES Legumes is a term generally used to describe the seeds of plants from the legume family which includes beans, peas, lentils, and peanuts. Legumes are high in dietary fibre which helps to keep the bowel healthy. They are also a good source of soluble fibre which can help lower blood cholesterol levels. Legumes are very low in fat. In fact, yogurt is a richer source of nutrients than most types of milk. 6) OATMEAL Oatmeal is a food very rich in fiber. It acts as a natural laxative to help prevent constipation. The fiber in oatmeal adds bulk to their stools to make the bowel movement process easier and gentler. This is actually helpful in helping children pass stools with ease. 7) APPLES Apples contain Vitamins like A, B1, B2, and C as well as minerals such as iodine, phosphorous, iron, and calcium. Have you ever heard that the ability of someone’s system to resist disease or get healed faster is dependent on how strong such a one’s immunity is? Currently at the moment, the world at large is experiencing this pandemic called Covid’19 which first broke out in a place called Wuhan in China. Now, you must have also heard that those with weak immune system, existing health challenges and old people are most likely at the risk of contacting this virus. I’m not here to talk about Covid’19 itself as a lot of articles have talked so much about it while there will still be lots more. It’s my sincere prayer to God that the whole pandemic come to an end in Jesus name. Okay! What I want to talk about centres on the immunity aspect. Immunity is the process by which the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells in the body help in the resistance of a particular infection or toxin. These antibodies and white blood cells are biological defenses that will fight infection, disease from invading the body or suppressing the action of infection The truth is that immunity differs from one person to another. Naturally, there are a lot of vitamins that help boost immune system and the good news about it is that most of these vitamins are present in abundance in the foods we eat. Broccoli contains sulfur compounds that research suggests boost production of glutathione, an antioxidant compound which helps free radicals to minimize their potential damage. Unfortunately, broccoli are rarely found in Nigeria. They are only readily accessible  some big supermarkets. Carrots: Carrots are highly rich in vitamin C which helps in boosting the immune system. Carrots also contain antioxidants which help the body fight free radicals, cell damage, and inflammation. 7) Bell Pepper: Bell pepper are highly rich in vitamin C and some other vitamins such as vitamin A, E and K1. 15 Things To Do In Order To Be At Peace With Your Roommate(s)

Everyone at one point or the other must have had a roommate while some still do. Even if anyone says he/she hasn’t had any before, such a one must have at least lived with someone. No one lives alone throughout life. And in actual fact, living with someone other than yourself is hard work even if the person is saved, sanctified and spirit filled. The reason for this is simple! We all are different in our make ups, thoughts, backgrounds, temperaments, and experiences. As much as some roommates can be sweet and loving, it is also possible to meet difficult ones, right? Let me quickly do a brief summary of my experience 👇 I started having roommates from Junior Secondary School 1 because I attended a boarding school. Well, it was one local boarding school though 😁. The only provision my mum gave me while going to the hostel for the first time was gaari 🤷‍♀️. I don’t even know there were things called golden morn or cornflakes at that time. Reason why I still don’t like most of them. That was the beginning of mocking from other co-boarders. I couldn’t relate well with my co-boarders. Fast forward to when I got to Junior Secondary School 2, we were only 2 girls left in the hostel 🤷‍♀️. (You know I already said it was a local boarding school I attended 😇). You see this other girl that was left showed me what I call PEPPER. She bullied me so much. Actually, she was meant to be my senior but she repeated a class thereby making us classmates. It was from her I learnt what is called LESBIANISM 🤨. She left when were in Junior Secondary School 3 after she decided to join witchcraft in order to do evil to me and some other fellows 😏 and God exposed her intentions. At the long run, I had to start living with my principal’s children (they were all female), so they felt that will be okay for me. By then, we had moved to our new and permanent hostel. We had a lots of fights but we came out stronger after we left. Fast forward to the University days, I had 4 roommates in my 100 level days. Well, I can say they were the best set of roommates because we all got along pretty well. Then in 200level, I had another set of 5 roommates. One day, I had an issue with my one of my roommates that made I cried. When I got to 300level, I had another set of 5 roommates. My bunkmate was even my church member but my people, she frustrated my life. I was in 300level while she was in 100level but she was older than me though. To turn on the bed alone was an issue. To come down from the up bunk was another issue😇. In my final year, I had another set of roommates as well. One day, one of them had a little issue with my side mate. And like a good child that I am, I decided to step in peacefully. My people, probably my timing was wrong but my side mate lashed me so much with words and I cried so much. If you beat me, I might not cry but if you talk to me roughly I will cry. In short, have 17 roommates while in University of Ibadan, so that means I lived with 17 different personalities. Now to this NYSC period. There is this lady that the church asked to stay with me till she settled her PPA and get her accommodation. So far so good, I have learnt so much from more than 25 people I’ve ever lived with in my life which I will love to share. Whether you have difficult roommates or you might have roommates later, these are what you need to do. These also applies on how to relate with your classmates 1) You need to understand that everyone is unique and different. Therefore, the way you relate with one person might not work with another person. Learn to study one’s personality first and deal with such one accordingly. This principle made me became so friendly with all my roommates I’ve ever had even to those we once had clashes. I see the need to approach each one accordingly. Some people are extrovert while are introverts. Some people are playful while some are not. Some people are dirty while some are not 😜 Some people have rough backgrounds while some have smooth ones. 2) Always pre approve forgiveness: My people, there is no how you’ll live with someone and wouldn’t step on each other’s toes at one point or the other. However, learning to forgive in advance will help you overlook even the biggest of all offences. 3) Learn to be patient: Patience is a virtue that every Christian needs to possess. If you are someone who easily gets irritated at little things, you’ll always have issue with your which and classmates which is very bad. In a situation when you even have more than 1 roommates, extra patience is even needed. 4) Learn to investigate before acting: In a situation when an issue happens, make sure you investigate and make good findings before jumping into conclusions. Don’t hear witness of something you don’t know unless you have verifies over and over again. 5) Learn to avoid ugly situations: When you already see signs of something ensuing between you and your roommate(s), try to avoid the situation in advance. In situations when living with someone is even extremely difficult, you can avoid by leaving the room if possible. Imagine your roommate is a serious threat to your spiritual life, you have to escape for thy life. Imagine your roommate is someone that brings guys to the room and they walk around nakedly 🤷‍♀️. Or your roommate is the one making you sin just like the one I had back while in

Meaning, Types, Causes, Prevention and Treatments of Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is almost like an everyday problem. Does it have any tragic effect among the population? What can be done about it? There are some basic facts you need to know about Diarrhoea: 1) Diarrhoea is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old. 2) It is both preventable and treatable. 3) Each year diarrhoea kills around 525 000 children under five. 4) Globally, there are nearly 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhoeal disease every year. 5) Diarrhoea is a leading cause of malnutrition in children under five years old.                     What is Diarrhoea? Diarrhoea is defined as the passage of three or more loose or liquid stools per day (or more frequent passage than is normal for the individual). Frequent passing of formed stools is not diarrhoea, nor is the passing of loose, “pasty” stools by breastfed babies.                     Types of Diarrhoea There are three clinical types of diarrhoea: 1) Acute watery diarrhoea – lasts several hours or days, and includes cholera 2) Acute bloody diarrhoea – also called dysentery 3) Persistent diarrhoea – lasts 14 days or longer. Note: The difference between Cholera and Dysentery is that diarrhoea is said to be cholera when there is passage of watery stool while it is dysentery when there is mucous stain or blood in the stool.              Causes of Diarrhoea 1) Diarrhoea is a symptom of infections caused by a host of bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms, most of which are spread by faeces-contaminated water. 2) Malnutrition: A malnourished child or adult has low immunity and any opportunistic infection can result to diarrhoea. 3) Chronic infections: A history of travel or antibiotic use can be clues to chronic diarrhea. Various bacteria and parasites can be the cause. 4) Other causes are Endocrine disorders and Malabsorptive disorders. 5) It can be caused from sources like water or animal feaces used as fertilizers from growing vegetables. Common signs and symptoms of diarrhoea are:– Watery stool (3 or more) in a day Stomach pain Abdominal cramps Bloating Thirst Weight loss Fever Blood or pus in the stools Persistent vomiting Dehydration      So How Can One Prevents Diarrhoea? a) Having access to safe drinking water: Do not drink water until you know the source of the water you are drinking and if you are not sure please boil or chlorinate the water before drinking. b) Maintaining a healthy and hygienic environment : Some persons environment is very untidy and have a lot of breeding site for flies please. To prevent diarrhoea, it is advisable to maintain a healthy environment. c) Always practicing washing of hands with soap and water: d) Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life: (For the nursing mothers and would be, this is very essential). e) Having a good personal and food hygiene. f) Properly washing of fruits and vegetables preferably with salt before eating or cooking. g) Avoiding eating of cold food: Some microorganisms breed on cold foods and may come out leading to diarrhoea. h) Properly storing of foods.    How To Treat Someone With Diarrhoea Key measures to treat diarrhoea include the following: 1) Fluids can be replaced by simply drinking more fluids, or they can be received intravenously(in hospital in severe cases.) Children and older people are more vulnerable to dehydration. 2) Oral rehydration solution or salts (ORS) refers to water that contains salt and glucose. It is absorbed by the small intestine to replace the water and electrolytes lost in the stool. 3) Zinc supplements: Zinc supplements reduce the duration of a diarrhoea episode by 25% and are associated with a 30% reduction in stool volume. 4) Antidiarrheal medication such as Loperamide, or Imodium, is an antimotility drug that reduces stool passage. Loperamide, Imodium,& Bismuth subsalicylate, for example, Pepto-Bismol, reduces diarrheal stool output in adults and children.
